I don’t often get to capture prom sessions, so when I was contacted by Lily to photograph her prom photos I was elated. Her prom was to take place at the Westin La Paloma, however they didn’t allow photography without being a guest. She inquired at a couple of other locations, but their answer was the same. I offered St. Phillips Plaza as an option and she decided to shoot her session there.
It turned out to be a lovely location to shoot, full of romance and whimsy. It was especially fitting for her fairytale-style dress and darling date. They made the cutest couple, and were up for all of my ideas as I had them climb stairs, dance, twirl, kiss and snuggle.
We met early, so they could still make their dinner reservations before the prom began. The light was a little high and harsh, but the plaza buildings and large surrounding trees helped to filter some of the harsh light. As it was a Friday afternoon, the plaza had quite a few people filtering in for dinner. There were even a few other prom attendees having their portraits taken as well. Although foot traffic in and out was high, we found some wonderful out-of-the way spots to shoot.
Lily’s dress was a beautiful pale pink with a full, layered tulle skirt that sparkled in the sunlight. Her date wore a complimentary gray suit with a matching pale pink tie. We began at one of the plaza entrances, because the black, windowed wall made a perfect backdrop. I then used some of the nearby bougainvillea, then we moved upstairs for some fun shots, followed by the plaza’s courtyard. I ended with Lily and her date dancing by the fountain. It was beautiful.
