Rubi’s Newborn Session

Newborn baby Rubi in lavender with a lavender bonnet

Last May, just after Tucson’s Covid lockdown, I was contacted by Rubi’s dad. He was looking for a newborn session as a gift for his wife for Mother’s Day. Rubi was a little older than my typical newborns, but after the lockdown all of the baby’s I was photographing were older than two weeks. I scheduled their session and soon met Rubi and her parents. She was eight weeks old and a gorgeous little baby. Since she was eight weeks old she wasn’t too keen on being posed like a newborn. After a few attempts to relax and lull her into sleep, it was time to wrap her. Most babies relax right into sleep once they are wrapped. After a good feeding and swaddle, she was out like a light.

As much as I love naked poses, wrapped poses are fun because you can do a lot in a short amount of time. A lot was what I did. My wrapped newborn sessions only last an hour and I get a full gallery of photos in that time. Rubi’s session was a full four hours. I picked feminine colors and some flowers to add into her session. Pink, purple, peach, a touch of yellow, some florals, and some personal items from home. Her parents were big fans of the Dallas Cowboys and brought in a special blanket with her name embroidered on it and a Dallas Cowboys jersey. They also brought one of her mom’s Air Force uniform shirts and a set of dog tags from her grandfather.

The session was exhausting because I was able to do so much with Rubi wrapped. I was setting up, tearing down, wrapping, and unwrapping like a mad woman. I loved it though, and I love how her session turned out.

I continued with purples, but changed up the pale colors for bright pink and peach hues.

The bright colors look beautiful on her.

Lilacs for Rubi. I started with the pale green rosette and bead tieback.

She looks so beautiful in purple with her tiny toes peeping from the wrap.

A little more muted colors, but kept the florals with a scarf.

I kept the vintage floral backdrop, but brought out the yellows and pinks in the drop.
